The Africa Youth in Tourism Innovation Summit (AYTIS) & Challenge is organised by Africa Tourism Partners in collaboration with UN Tourism and BDO. It is the only pan-African summit focused on youth and start-ups in the tourism sector and an innovation challenge in tourism across the continent.

This competition invites and welcomes innovative ideas and solutions that goes beyond technology but are travel, tourism and MICE industry related projects for review and adjudication by a preeminent panel of industry leaders. Through the summit and other media platforms, top 5 finalists of the Africa Youth in Tourism Innovation Challenge are introduced to industry leaders, mentors and potential funders and/or partnerships.

Who Attends?

Held annually, delegates connect with influential tourism leaders and dynamic entrepreneurial innovators from Africa and around the world.  It attracts over 750 in-person delegates and 2,000 virtual participants each year. Attendees include ministers, policymakers, thought leaders, industry leaders, tour operators, hospitality providers, transportation services, educational institutions, travel and marketing technology start-ups and incubators, employment agencies, and professional development organisations. Additionally, the event features small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs), start-ups, students, entrepreneurs, and government officials from Africa and around the world.

This diverse assembly comprises young women entrepreneurs who own and manage tourism enterprises, innovative venture capitalists, and pioneering tech entrepreneurs. It also includes university students, academic lecturers, start-up founders and representatives from youth agencies. Furthermore, officials from public youth institutions, educational centres, and investors dedicated to promoting innovation are vital contributors to our endeavours. Also present are experienced executives and staff members from organisations focused on youth development, entrepreneurship, and tourism career guidance. Collectively, we are dedicated to addressing significant challenges within the tourism sector and advancing its future.

The Summit is established to nurture African youth, start-ups, small enterprises and accelerator initiatives to pursue opportunities across the global tourism ecosystem to become industry change-makers and future industry leaders. Other specific objectives are to:

  • Create a viable intra-Africa business network to support youths, start-ups and small enterprises to maximise their leadership potentials;
  •  Drive a transformative change in their societies and nations at large through critical and design thinking;
  • Train, inspire and equip the youths across Africa to impact their world, and proffer lasting innovative solutions for growing Africa tourism sector;
  • Empower youth at all levels, start-ups and small enterprises by offering market access, business development, value-partnership, mentorship and funding solutions;
  • Present an opportunity for youth to showcase their tourism related businesses and bankable projects to the global marketplace in order to find the required support;
  • Offer career development opportunities for youth interested in pursuing careers in travel, tourism, academia, hospitality, aviation, conservation and related industries and sub-sectors.
  • Network with among others, potential investors, public sector entities, start-ups, academia, corporations, accelerators and venture builders;
  • Exchange of knowledge, business models and build partnerships;
  • Learn about strategies for developing robust innovation culture in tourism anchored on skills development for business growth;
  • Gain from career guidance as fresh high school and university graduate interested in travel and tourism eco-system careers;
